They first started in 1976 with the original name of Jelgava Grain Combine. Then, in 1979 they started the construction of a new combined animal feed plant and the second grain silo and the company was renamed as “Dobele Grain Products Combine”. In 1982 the new plant was completed and operation ran smoothly and without new innovations until the year 1991 when the company changed its name to Dobeles Dzirnavniek. Throughout the 1990s the company was privatised and the current joint stock company “Dobeles Dzirnavnieks” was established. They also introduced and certified its quality control system according to the ISO 9001:1994 standard in order to continue operating in compliance with ISO standards. Also, the HACCP food safety system was introduced.

In the 2000s, an animal feed production equipment from the company “Bühler” was installed in an effort to ensure the accurate dosing of raw materials and the homogeneity of the fodder produced. They also entered into partnership with an international food concern which included Germany’s largest mill “Saalemühle Alsleben” GmbH and Estonia’s largest mill “Tartu Veski”. And in 2009 JSC “Dobeles Dzirnavnieks” ranked eighth amongst Latvian food producers in terms of its turnover based on the turnover they had in the year 2008 which was 29 million LVL.  Their innovations continued and they renovated their grain reception intake and many new grain pre-cleaning devices were installed in order to increase their grain reception capacity. In 2010 a production plant for different grain flakes was launched and the food and animal feed warehouses were reconstructed in order to considerably increase their warehousing capacity and optimize logistics.

The company´s main  areas of operation are the food production processes with the production of all types of flour and flour mixtures, flakes of different cereals, semolina, groats, pearl-barleys and food-grade bran;  the packaging of rice, buckwheat, beans, peas and other products business;  the animal feed production business which has to do with the production and sale of wholesome animal feed, supplementary fodder, mineral fodder, concentrates, premixes and raw materials for different ages and animal groups;  their services business which is the  provision of bulk grain storage, processing, cleaning and drying services; and the realization services which is the export of products for wholesale which have been processed, packed and stored via road or rail transport.

And of course, they are a company that gives dynamism to the economy by purchasing grains from suppliers in the region. The thing is that they have a strict purchasing process which pays a lot of attention to the types of grains. They sort their grains in three main groups when they purchase:

  1. The ones  grown according to safety and harmlessness requirements of the European Union and are categorized according to different quality groups and grades developed by grain breeders such as Barley, Oats, Rye, peas and  buckwheat
  2. Grains grown using specially monitored and planned grain growing technology, which is certified according to the provisions of BQM (Baking Quality Management) standard
  3. Grains that due to quality reasons cannot be used for human food production (small in size, split, insufficient in quantity and quality of protein or starch), but are clean, healthy and can be used in the production of animal feed
